WINNER
COCKSHUT RESTORATION PROJECT
LEWES BROOKS, KINGSTON ROAD, LEWES
Delivered by Ouse & Adur Rivers Trust, Lewes District Council and partners, the project restored a rare chalk stream and created 6ha of wetland in Lewes. Designed for climate resilience, biodiversity, and community engagement, it supports freshwater species and over-wintering birds, integrates low-carbon practices, and respects the local heritage and SSSI status. The scheme enhances carbon sequestration, reduces invasive species, and fosters long-term stewardship through volunteer engagement— establishing a sustainable, biodiverse landscape within the South Downs National Park.
“The project provided positive change, informed by the historic landscape and one that can be replicated elsewhere, giving landowners the inspiration.
The site after 18 months has an abundance of wildlife. All spoil was reused on site, UK oak was sourced for the bridges and local residents and volunteers were actively involved.
An excellent example of a partnership that has given nature the opportunity to recover and created a place for both wildlife and people to enjoy. Cockshut Restoration Project demonstrates how considered interventions can quickly deliver significant nature gains.”
