BRIGHTON DOME & CORN EXCHANGE IMPROVEMENT WORKS

Brighton’s Grade I Corn Exchange and Grade II Studio Theatre have been revitalised through a £38 million transformation. This sensitive refurbishment restores iconic architectural elements while introducing modern infrastructure, improved accessibility, and energy-efficient systems. Featuring a new central foyer, creative spaces, and sustainable upgrades—including LED lighting, heat recovery, and reopened natural light sources—the project re-establishes the venue as a dynamic, inclusive cultural hub, uniting heritage preservation with future-ready performance and community facilities.

LANCING COLLEGE FIVES CAFÉ

LANCING COLLEGE, COLLEGE DRIVE, LANCING BN15 0RW

The project transformed two historic Eton Fives courts into a vibrant café and social space, with landscaped outdoor areas enhancing student wellbeing and biodiversity. The remaining courts were sensitively restored. Working within a listed setting, the design preserved heritage while introducing sustainable upgrades, natural light, and flexible use. This adaptive reuse allowed the former café to become a Sixth Form Centre, unlocking key elements of the College’s masterplan.

Newhaven Fort, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, underwent a £7.5 million conservation-led transformation to secure its future as a vital heritage and community asset. Works included masonry repairs, casemate restoration, improved accessibility, new exhibitions, a gift shop, and a destination adventure playground. Sensitive heritage approaches were central, ensuring the preservation of historic fabric. Sustainability strategies—like energy-efficient upgrades, ventilation improvements, and biodiversity measures—enhanced the Fort’s resilience, creating a revitalised, accessible visitor experience that honours its military heritage.

THE RICHARD CAIRNS BUILDING

BRIGHTON COLLEGE, EASTERN ROAD BN2 0AL

The project completes a 15-year masterplan, delivering a landmark performing arts and teaching facility within a historic 19th-century campus. Designed to balance bold contemporary architecture with heritage sensitivity, the building features a raised 400-seat theatre, dance, drama and music spaces, classrooms, and a sixth form centre. Achieving BREEAM Excellent and EPC A, it utilises natural materials, borehole heat pumps, and rooftop solar PV. This low-energy, passive design enhances student experience while securing a long-term, sustainable legacy.

CHRISTIAN YOUTH ENTERPRISES SAILING CENTRE, CHIDHAM PO18 8TE

The proposal was to replace an existing low two-storey building as it was no longer fit for purpose. The new building would replace the staff community accommodation, providing dedicated training and meeting spaces, improved kit storage and boat maintenance, as well as safeguarding-conscious showering and changing facilities. The new state-of-the-art building is accessible, practical and environmentally considerate.

WEST WITTERING SAFETY AND FACILITIES HUB

THE ESTATE OFFICE, POUND ROAD, WEST WITTERING PO20 8GH

The scheme delivered a sustainable, low-impact building that replaces outdated lifeguard and public amenities at West Wittering Beach. It provides a modern lookout tower with medical facilities, expanded public toilets, showers, and a Changing Places facility. Designed to blend into the Chichester Harbour AONB, it uses FSC timber, gabion walls, and marine-grade copper. With air source heat pumps, rooftop solar PV, and biodiversity-focused landscaping, the hub is an example of environmentally sensitive coastal infrastructure.

The restoration project, funded by a MEND Grant, revitalised the museum’s entrance structures through sensitive conservation and adaptive reuse. Key historic buildings—including the Bagging Shed and Loading Bay—were restored and adapted, improving visitor experience while preserving industrial heritage. Contemporary interventions, such as a bespoke glazed screen and discreet structural reinforcements, respect the site’s character. Sustainability guided all work, with minimal intervention and breathable insulation. The result is a more accessible, engaging, and financially resilient museum.

The Bexhill Library refurbishment aimed to improve energy efficiency and modernise facilities within a 10-week programme. Works included window upgrades, internal reconfiguration, damp proofing, heating improvements, and full redecoration. Located in a conservation area, window replacements adhered to heritage guidelines. Key sustainability enhancements included new double-glazed units, solar photovoltaic panels, and battery storage, significantly reducing the building’s carbon footprint. Careful coordination with UK Power Networks ensured safe working near an adjacent substation during construction.

This ambitious multi-use redevelopment has re-energised Brighton’s historic Jewish community by creating a dynamic, inclusive hub serving both Jewish and wider communities. The site includes a synagogue, nursery, kosher restaurant, mikvah, and 45 homes, alongside welcoming spaces for cultural exchange, learning, and celebration. Designed with sustainability in mind, including green roofs and ground source heat pumps, the scheme blends heritage with innovation. The scheme is an example of community-led regeneration in a diverse and vibrant urban setting.

The project delivered a new sustainable community hub, replacing outdated facilities with a cross-laminated timber hall, flats, offices, and laundrette. Designed for the Littlehampton & Rustington Housing Society, the scheme features air source heat pumps, solar panels, and high insulation, achieving EPC A ratings and significant carbon reductions. Sensitive construction, near elderly residents and challenging drainage issues were successfully managed. The new buildings enhance community life while promoting longterm environmental performance and energy efficiency.

PLATINUM HOUSE, MACFARLANE WAY, HORSHAM RH12 1EP

West Sussex’s first new fire station and live fire training facility since 1974, delivering a cuttingedge, sustainable environment for 24-hour emergency response and firefighter training. Located in Horsham, it features a live fire centre, training tower, EV charging, solar panels, and air source heat pumps. Its striking gold cladding balances civic identity with operational discretion. The project demonstrates a contemporary approach to fire service infrastructure, prioritising health, inclusivity, and environmental responsibility.
