BURY GATE FARM

PULBOROUGH

A new five-bedroom dwelling which replaced a dilapidated 1950’s bungalow. The house was developed as a modern reinterpretation of a villa/small country house within a parkland setting, to reflect the heavy clay soils found in this part of Sussex. The loose stepped plan is ordered by a two-storey colonnade, allowing for the interior to take in the expansive views of the Downs and the colour deriving from the local Fittleworth Stone.

CALEDONIAN ROAD

CHICHESTER

The renovation and extension of a Victorian cottage and the Change of Use of a former Barbers shop built in the 1970s to form part of an unusual and triangular, corner plot in the Conservation Area. Both buildings were in very poor condition, work was to improve the aesthetics, layout and function of the dwelling and to create a level, accessible garden with studio/store and parking.

COURTYARD

EAVESDROP

BALCOMBE

A single-storey house designed as a retirement home, sitting in the grounds of a Grade II listed Lodge house. The brief was for a low-energy house which drew reference from the traditional agricultural buildings of the High Weald. The stone, both externally and internally in the house, refers to the Wealden Sandstone of the listed Lodge. At the centre of the house is the courtyard, which organises the overall plan for the living spaces.

NEW DWELLING AT SHARDS

CUCKFIELD

The original site was an old quarry, which had been filled in the 80s. From the outset, Morgan Carn understood that planning permission would only be granted via the ‘Outstanding and Innovative Architecture’ clause in the NPPF. Design inspiration was taken from historic documents showing the outline of the quarry to help inform the footprint and form. There were numerous revisions which helped to develop the original architectural concept into a practical construction project.

NEW DWELLING AT WEALD HOUSE

KEYMER

Located within underutilised parkland, set in the curtilage of the client’s existing dwelling, Weald Hall. The initial brief was for a five-bedroom dwelling, with high ambitions for energy efficiency and environmental impact. An important feature of the site’s topography was the gentle slope towards the south, the shallow angle of the slope posed challenges for the earthwork design. A commitment was made to achieve Passivhaus performance with a complex zinc roof design.

PALFREY FARM

PETWORTH

Enlargement of two extensions, erection of new porch, alterations to fenestration, internal alterations and new garden wall with new landscaping. The Grade II medieval and 17th-century elements being highly sensitive were not considered capable of change which would affect the historic character of the original house. The exception was the new porch, but the main extensions and changes were kept to the later (19th-century and 20th-century) phases of the dwelling.

WESTBROOK HOUSE

TILLINGTON

The once grand house rented out since 1953 had fallen into disrepair. The relaxed vernacular charm of the north elevations were counterbalanced by Georgian interventions to the south. Unsightly additions like a lift shaft and boiler flue, along with a modern garage were removed. The landscape to the north was excavated to create a terraced garden, which allowed direct access from the newly appointed pantry to the kitchen garden and reinstated Victorian vine-house.

LINDFIELD RESIDENCE

Located within the grounds of a Grade II listed property, the new detached home was to provide an exciting, fun and dynamic space for an energetic family. The extensive glazing maximised transparency through the building, designed to dissolve boundaries between inside and out.
