SALTDEAN LIDO

SALTDEAN PARK ROAD, SALTDEAN, BRIGHTON BN2 8SP

The only Grade II* listed lido in the country was threatened in 2010 by plans to develop the site into flats. The local community campaigned against this and took on the lease for the site themselves and restored the pool in 2017. With support from the NHLF, the volunteer team took on the current project focusing on the major restoration and repair of the dilapidated building. This included the reinstatement of original features such as the neon-lit signage, the chimney and spiral staircase connecting the café and ballroom.

TITCHFIELD MARKET HALL

WEALD & DOWNLAND LIVING MUSEUM, TOWN LANE, CHICHESTER PO18 0EU

Originally built around 1619 in Titchfield, Hampshire, the Hall was moved and re-erected at the museum between 1972 and 1974. A condition survey in 2020 by Ed Morton identified significant areas of decay to the frame. The resulting repair saw the carpenter team taking careful notes and decision-making on ensuring tight jointing and finishes to surfaces. Once complete hand-made bricks from Bulmer Bricks were used in the infill panels in a lime mortar for breathability.

BOSHAM SAILING CLUB, BALCONY PROJECT

THE QUAY, BOSHAM, CHICHESTER PO18 8LU

Once a Mill House, the Grade II listed building is believed to date from the 18th Century. In recent years a ‘temporary’ marquee was erected to provide additional accommodation for the Club. The brief was to replace the marquee with a delicate balcony structure that would provide a vantage point to watch the sailing, standing next to but not obscuring the listed building and to utilise its under croft for additional club space.

ENTRANCE PORCH AT EASTERGATE VILLAGE HALL

BARNHAM ROAD, EASTERGATE, CHICHESTER PO20 3RP

The brief was to provide a fully DDA-compliant entrance to the village hall which was both contemporary and welcoming, whilst complimenting the existing building. The completed scheme consists of a new fully glazed entrance lobby, built on a red brick plinth, with a dark grey aluminium structure to compliment and match the existing building. The previously external column features are retained and now form part of the interior of the lobby.

FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE

32 FRIARS WALK, LEWES BN7 2LE

A Grade II listed building dating from 1774, which had been poorly maintained and subject to various unsympathetic alterations. The flat roof rear extensions were rebuilt to provide a large foyer space, the residents flat completely retrofitted and the creations of four rentable rooms, has enabled future financial stability. A new gateway in the listed boundary wall enhances the visibility as well as facilitating a level path from an existing dropped curb.

Situated in the heart of the campus, the creation of the Agri-food Centre forms the centrepiece of new development across the College. The new building is a blend of contemporary architecture with traditional Sussex materials, set under a sleek monolithic green roof design maximising the potential for effective shading and screening and to minimise solar gain. INTERIOR

THE CHICHESTER SHED

GRAYLINGWELL DRIVE, CHICHESTER PO19 6AN

A community space that combines traditional timber work with urban design of the polished concrete floor and panels of OSB framing the walls. The brief was to create a space that could feel both versatile – to meet the needs of its varied users; and simultaneously designed with purpose. The result is built with the Sussex vernacular in mind, with its strong timber frame and cladding. Glulam beams provide a natural alternative to steel or concrete.
