PLANT PERSON’S GARDEN

PEASMARSH

The brief was to remodel the border and lawn shapes in the central area of a large garden to create a showstopping, inspiring and cohesive scheme. This was to be achieved by creating a more immersive and inspiring planting scheme with year-round interest and colour, making it less shrub-dominant and incorporating all the existing plants, whilst also keeping a large area of lawn and adding to the existing gravel paths.

RYE COTTAGE

ITCHENOR, WEST SUSSEX

A basement lightwell and terraces to a new home office extension with a vegetable garden, the renovation of existing borders and planting to screen the property with a sensitivity to the local environment. Changes were made to mitigate the risk of a 100-year flood event. A greenhouse incorporates water capture, plant choices reflect a changing climate, and natural stone enables lichen to colonise.

WOOLBEDING GLASSHOUSE

WOOLBEDING GARDENS – NATIONAL TRUST, BRAMBLING LANE, MIDHURST GU29 9RR

A new 12-step Silk Route Garden takes visitors through a landscape influenced by the ancient trading routes between Asia and Europe. The final point of this botanical journey is the glasshouse. The structure was created in a jewel-like shape, radially symmetrical like a large terrarium and on a warm day, the building’s ‘sepals’ (or petals) stretch outwards using a hydraulic mechanism to open creating a crown or flower shape to welcome in the sunlight.

POOL

THE OLD RECTORY

PULBOROUGH

A detached Grade II* listed Georgian house with the brief for a natural swimming pool and garden pavilion. The pavilion aimed to rationalise the rear garden with further planting of trees and vegetation and to allow a diverse ecosystem on the grounds with the natural swimming pool. Built in a neo-classical style to not detract from the main house, minimal detailing of natural stone friezes and cornices referencing the Georgian architecture.

WINDMILL BANK GARDEN

SELSFIELD COMMON, EAST GRINSTEAD

The brief was for a garden that not only was functional but also prioritised sustainability, biodiversity and water efficiency within its rural location. The 1.5-acre plot was transformed into a sustainable garden design focusing on creating entertaining areas and enhancing the routes to the house. The planting scheme mainly consisted of perennials and grasses to leverage the natural features of the site and Pyrus Chanticleer trees to provide shade and screening to the house.
