NEW DWELLING AT SHARDS

CUCKFIELD

The original site was an old quarry, which had been filled in the 80s. From the outset, Morgan Carn understood that planning permission would only be granted via the ‘Outstanding and Innovative Architecture’ clause in the NPPF. Design inspiration was taken from historic documents showing the outline of the quarry to help inform the footprint and form. There were numerous revisions which helped to develop the original architectural concept into a practical construction project.

“New Dwelling at Shards has sustainability at its core, which is considered a fundamental part of the design and not an afterthought. Despite its very challenging technical detailing, all aspects of sustainability have been considered and the result is a really impressive piece of architecture.”

KNEPP WILDING KITCHEN AND SHOP

SWALLOWS LANE, DIAL POST, HORSHAM RH13 8NQ

A multi-functional space series featuring a café/restaurant and farm shop showcasing sustainable, ethical produce, centred around a stunning naturally landscaped courtyard. Instead of demolition, the project re-purposed the existing buildings, including an 18th-century threshing barn that was restored, extended, and converted into a kitchen and a redundant sheep shed into the shop. Both buildings were converted using ethical materials and are heated with renewable energy systems. Douglas fir from Cowdray Estate was used to restore elements of the barn and the same timber was used as cladding to the shop.

NEW DWELLING AT WEALD HOUSE

KEYMER

Located within underutilised parkland, set in the curtilage of the client’s existing dwelling, Weald Hall. The initial brief was for a five-bedroom dwelling, with high ambitions for energy efficiency and environmental impact. An important feature of the site’s topography was the gentle slope towards the south, the shallow angle of the slope posed challenges for the earthwork design. A commitment was made to achieve Passivhaus performance with a complex zinc roof design.
