The conversion of this Parish Hall involved extensive structural alterations to allow the construction of an extension and remodelled outside space. The new Community Hub links the Parish with the Real Junk Food Project, Brighton Table Tennis Club and Voices in Exile, opening out into the new courtyard via folding glazed doors, providing a light airy environment for visitors to the facilities. Accessibility was the key and required adjusting floor levels to accommodate level access.

GRAYLINGWELL CHAPEL

BLOMFIELD DRIVE, GRAYLINGWELL PARK, CHICHESTER PO19 6BZ

Located in Graylingwell Park, on the former Graylingwell Hospital site, Chichester Community Development Trust converted the listed hospital chapel to a vibrant heritage centre. The fabric of the building was restored while reconfiguring the space to be flexible and welcoming, which was to complement the chapel’s distinctive layout and original purpose as an asylum church with new structures that enhance the architecture.

LITTLEWOOD LOOKOUT

SLINDON

Situated within the 75ha ‘The Rise of Northwood’ woodland regeneration project, Littlewood Lookout, looks over regenerating wood pasture, grassland and woodland. The restoration project is in the centre of the National Trust’s Slindon Estate, and saw the installation of a sustainable, robust but simplistic round-wood timber framed building. The hut was made using natural materials, mainly from the Estate and the design chosen to blend into the surroundings.

SEVEN SISTERS COUNTRY PARK

EXCEAT, EAST DEAN ROAD, SEAFORD BN25 4AD

The main visitor hub at Exceat includes the Visitor’s Centre located in the Grade II listed barn, six curtilage listed historic buildings and courtyard spaces associated with the historic farmstead. The £1.9 million project included alterations to the Grade II listed Visitor Centre to improve the visitor experience, conversion of the Dairy Barn to provide additional office accommodation, refurbishment of the Rangers Office creation of additional public toilets and improvements to the public realm.

BRENT LODGE BIRD & WILDLIFE TRUST ADMISSIONS BUILDING

The construction of a purpose designed Wildlife Admissions Building with veterinary facility. The building comprises a visitor reception for the admission of patients and an information centre to inform the public about the Trust’s mission. Asymmetric mono-pitch roofs are a prominent design feature with natural finishes including vertical cedar boarding and a green roof designed to settle the building into the landscape and provide biodiversity enhancement.

Restoration of the Grade II listed Temple building, the historic home of Brighton Girls since the school was established in 1876. The entrance for the school was reinstated in the Temple Building with the ground floor ‘Hive’ becoming a multi-use café-come-learning space for all students. The basement, previously toilets, lockers and estate offices, is now a flexible music department. The top floor, previously classrooms and stores, is a new sixth form centre

REPAIR AND CONSERVATION OF NORTH PARK FURNACE

FURNACE WOOD, VANN ROAD, LINCHMERE GU27 3NJ

The project involved critical repairs to the failing sluice and spillway structures on a pond dam near Fernhurst, which historically served the 17th-century North Park Iron Furnace and now protect the archaeological remains. The site was listed as a Scheduled Monument in 2005 and placed on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register. Works included detailed specification of the structural repair and reinstatement of stone facing, along with conservation of the masonry and timber remains of the furnace site.

STUDENT CENTRE, UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX

REFECTORY ROAD, FALMER, BRIGHTON BN1 9BU

Located at the heart of the student residential area, the new student centre was created to help the students to study well, be well and live well while also supporting the wellbeing of everybody using the space. The design narrative is rooted in the local context reflecting the Sussex coastline, the South Down hills and Brighton itself, all of which helped form a language for the finishes and features.

The Brighton School of Business and Law forms a bold new gateway to the University of Brighton. Conceived as part of the University’s broader ‘Open for Business’ campaign, the building was designed to invite greater connection between academia and local business. The school has become a beacon of enterprise and innovation for the surrounding region, welcoming local enterprise and industry onto the campus with up-skilling and mentoring opportunities that in turn offer students valuable real-world business experience.
