THE REDEVELOPMENT AND REDEPLOYMENT OF THE ROYAL SUSSEX COUNTY HOSPITAL’S GRADE II LISTED CHAPEL

BRIGHTON 3TS, EASTERN ROAD, BRIGHTON BN2 5BE

The Grade II listed, 19th-century historic church was to be moved from its original location in the hospital’s original Barry Building, which was soon-to-be demolished to allow for a new 3T’s (Trauma, Teaching and Tertiary Care) unit. The reconstruction and restoration for the chapel took place offsite in a bespoke, three-storey concrete box, with the historic fabric of the chapel being slotted into place at the new site, keeping disruption to a minimum.

During

ECOLOGY, ENVIRONMENT AND BATS, ST GEORGE’S CHURCH

RECTORY LANE, WEST GRINSTEAD, HORSHAM RH13 8LR

An outstanding Grade I listed, 12th-century church, nestled down near the banks of the river Adur. The PCC developed a strategic vision to preserve and enhance the church, making it more environmentally friendly and energy efficient. In order to protect the bats, but provide protection to the church fabric, a boarded space between the roof and the roof beams was constructed. While this work was underway the opportunity was taken to modernise wiring, lighting and overhaul the heating system.

ECO RETROFIT AND CONSERVATION REPAIRS TO ST MARY’S CHURCH

CHURCH LANE, FUNTINGTON PO18 9LH

A Grade II* listed church situated in the South Downs, the brief was to replace the roof covering which was failing due to batten decay and “nail sickness”. At the same time the Archbishop of Canterbury launched the Church of England’s mission of achieving net-zero-carbon by 2030, this led to the architect investigating ways that sustainable enhancements could be incorporated into the existing programme of ongoing repairs. This included discrete recessed solar panels within the valleys of the Nave and North Aisles.
