LOOKING GLASS LODGE

GRANGEWOOD, BATTERY HILL, FAIRLIGHT, HASTINGS TN35 4AL

Looking Glass Lodge is a unique woodland retreat and holiday let, set within a natural clearing in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Shaped by a low-impact, material-driven and sustainable design approach, the lodge is hidden away from view, blending seamlessly into the protected woodland. Built by local craftsmen, the lodge features an intentionally limited palette of natural materials, including the same species of timber on the external cladding and internal lining.

THE GEORGE IN RYE

98 HIGH STREET, RYE TN31 7JT

A historic coaching inn formed from a cluster of interlinked listed buildings in the heart of the ancient citadel, that was subject to a devastating fire in July 2019. The complex restoration project focused on a sustainable design ethos to renovate the existing building fabric combined with salvaged and reused materials. During the restoration the owners took the opportunity to improve the internal layout, flow and the interlinking spaces resulting in a new glazed lobby to the courtyard.

THE WOODCARVERS STUDIO

DUMPFORD LANE, NYEWOOD GU31 5JL

The brief was to design and build a suitable studio space for professional artist and wood sculptor, Alison Crowther. A traditional style timber-framed building was developed for the making of large sculptures, within which there is also a specific carving studio for smaller pieces and a designing area. The outdoor space provides additional working areas, storage of timber stock and also a potential exhibiting space with inspirational views of the downs.

THE LONG MAN INN

THE STREET, WILMINGTON BN26 5SQ

Classified an Asset of Community Value by Wealden District Council and prohibited from being developed into residential, local resident Peter Bridgewater purchased the pub, which required complete restoration, in order to save it for the village.
The building was stripped back to bare brick, re-roofed, fully insulated, re-wired,
re-plumbed and re-plastered. Traditional double-glazed sash windows were fitted throughout as well as underfloor heating, a new commercial kitchen and modern toilets. The rear was extended out to provide four luxurious overnight guest rooms and a self-contained staff flat.
