An ecological, sustainable, low-cost garden with low carbon footprint, using natural materials. The new garden needed to ensure biodiversity and reinstatement of habitat for the resident bats on the property. The front garden is a drought tolerant gravel garden, planted in a naturalistic style with sculptural sea timbers placed on end in the borders among the plants. The rear garden clay paver paths lead through a small orchard surrounded by a perennial wildflower meadow, with a vegetable garden, seating area, pond and bog garden at the end.

Since winning a Sussex Heritage Trust Award in 2017, the beautiful gardens have continued to be reinstated and renovated. Work includes demolishing unsightly 70’s buildings and replanting to bring lost courtyards back to life, recreating new areas of garden and reinstating three miles of ‘measured walks’ throughout the Estate’s 165 acres; connecting the Estate grounds to National Trust heathland and the South Downs National Park.

The new facility is approached by a belt of newly planted woodland which forms a green spine through the site. A car parking area is a mix of ornamental species trees and a range of planted beds. The building orientation is focused to the south with views out over a reflection pool and wildflower meadows. A mixture of flower garden areas are provided with sensory planting and large potted trees.
