BNJC, THE SHUL

HOVE

Brighton & Hove Jewish Community commissioned Morgan Carn Architects to create a mixed-use synagogue and community complex aimed at revitalising Brighton’s declining Jewish community. Centred around a tranquil courtyard beneath historic elm trees, the design combines worship, housing, education, business, and community facilities. A blue-glazed terracotta screen gives the synagogue privacy and symbolic identity, while integrated security and sustainable landscaping support modern needs. Reused materials and references to the former synagogue ensure continuity, creating an inclusive, carefully crafted community hub rooted in heritage and long-term resilience.

THE PARISH CHURCH OF ROTTINGDEAN

BRIGHTON

Renovation of St Margaret of Antioch Church enhanced usability and sustainability while preserving its Grade II* heritage. Works included replacing decayed flooring with Jura stone over new underfloor heating, improving accessibility, reordering internal spaces, and installing audio-visual systems. Stained glass conservation and new glazed doors further upgraded the building. Archaeological discoveries, including human remains and Anglo- Saxon fabric, were carefully managed. The project delivers a flexible, energy-efficient space supporting both worship and wider community use.

HOLY TRINITY CHURCH

EASTBOURNE

Restoration of Holy Trinity Church secured this Grade II* landmark by resolving extensive roof failure and water ingress. Originally planned as minor repairs, works expanded to full replacement of lead coverings using traditional sand-cast lead, alongside timber, stone, and render repairs. Careful retention of sound fabric preserved heritage value, while selective structural repairs ensured integrity. Delivered within budget, the project improves durability, reduces maintenance needs, and safeguards the church’s long-term use and community function.

ST. LEONARD’S CHURCH

SOUTH STOKE

Restoration of St Leonard’s Church addressed prolonged water ingress, safeguarding the building’s fabric and improving longevity. Major technical works included stripping and re-tiling nave and chancel roofs with reinstated peg tiles, lime mortar detailing with stainless mesh reinforcement, and installation of a bat-friendly felt with a hessian matrix under ecological supervision. New clay ridge tiles, bat access provisions, and upgraded cast iron guttering improved performance. Additional repairs to stonework and stained glass have revitalised the church, enhancing its condition and ensuring continued community enjoyment.
