2021 SOUTH DOWNS DESIGN AWARD: sponsored by the South Downs National Park Authority

The South Downs Design Award is for works of outstanding design which clearly demonstrate a positive contribution to the South Downs National Park, including schemes that have conserved and enhanced the natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural heritage of the area. The Winner and Highly Commended projects are selected from the Sussex Heritage Trust Award Winners within the South Downs National Park.

WINNER

BELLOC CLOSE, MIDHURST

Four new homes built on the site of an ambulance station. King & Drury worked closely with MH Architects to create a contemporary scheme within the historic town of Midhurst. Ground levels were reduced so that the new houses sit low behind the street scheme and within the original outline of the ambulance station.

HIGHLY COMMENDED

LANDOUR, TELSCOMBE

A flint-clad house located on the top of the South Downs, replacing a previous 1930s chalet bungalow in poor condition. The new design retained broadly the same form as the original building with a single pitched roof, but introduced large gable end windows to take in the expansive surrounding views, alongside cut outs in the roof shape to create sheltered roof terraces.

THE GOODWOOD EDUCATION CENTRE, HOME FARM, GOODWOOD, CHICHESTER PO18 0QF

The brief was to replace the existing education facilities (a timber shed) with a new sustainable Education Centre, providing modern and appealing facilities. The single storey building comprises a timber frame with cedar roof shingles and larch wood panelling. All external timber was sourced from and milled on the Goodwood Estate.
