TERRY ADSETT FRICS

Terry Adsett FRICS is a Chartered Building Surveyor who has practiced in Sussex for over 40 years. He is also (unusually) RIBA Part 1 Qualified, bringing a technical clarity alongside architectural design to schemes from conception to completion. Terry’s quiet professionalism inspires confidence in those around him and this is reflected in his detailed work and impressive portfolio with multiple awards.

Terry ran his own successful architectural practice in Petworth for 27 years before joining Savills (Smiths Gore at the time) as a partner in 2000. The practice specialised in the care and conservation of historic buildings in South-East England, with particular interest in Sussex vernacular buildings and the Sussex landscape. Terry stood down as a Partner and Head of the Architectural & Building Surveying Department in May 2013 and now acts as a consultant to Savills on major projects.

Projects on which Terry has worked in Sussex include Coultershaw Heritage Site, near Petworth; St Andrew’s Church, Nuthurst; Mockford Cottages, Cowfold; the major restoration of a 16th-century Grade II farmhouse on the Glynde Estate; and Petworth House Tennis Court Extension. The last two projects both won Sussex Heritage Awards, the Tennis Court extension being recognised this year as “a superb result, meeting all the aspirations of the interested parties and making extensive use of locally sourced materials” and “adjoining one of the most important country houses in England.”

In addition, Terry has been Chairman of the RICS Awards (South East Region), concentrating on Conservation Awards. To cap it all, he is an accomplished watercolour artist, has exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in London and often use his skills as an artist when preparing presentations of projects. In all these ways, Terry has made an invaluable contribution to the conservation and enhancement of the built environment of Sussex and SE England over many years.
