Situated next to a designated SSSI site, the beach houses offer spectacular views of the sea and unparalleled access to the beach. Architect, Stuart Martin from WAMdesign, set out to minimise the houses’ impact on the environment, both visually and physically whilst taking advantages offered by the views and landscape in a very understated but confident architecture.

PRIORY FARM HOUSE, POLEGATE

The brief was to replace an existing dwelling that had been a family home, which had been poorly extended in the past.  The replacement dwelling was larger than the original house so consideration was given to ensure it enhanced both its immediate and wider setting.

SOUTH STREET, LEWES

The brief was to design a contemporary family home on the banks of the River Ouse.  The planning authority set a challenge to make this a ‘landmark’ building to denote the entrance to the town, which should also respect the Grade II listed neighbouring property and enhance the conservation area which it bounds.

MOCKFORD,  PARKMINSTER, nr COWFOLD

Restoration of timber framed building from two farm cottages into a single dwelling. The 16th-century building is listed and surrounded by farmland owned by St Hugh’s Charterhouse, Parkminster (Carthusian Order).

GRANTHAM ROAD, BRIGHTON

Completed on a small budget and set within the tight confines of an urban plot in the Preston Park Conservation area, the new-build 3-bedroom house was the first private dwelling to achieve a code for sustainable homes level 5 in Brighton and Hove.

LITTLE ENGLAND FARM, HADLOW DOWN

The project comprised the sustainable management of a 275 acre Wealden countryside estate. This included the redevelopment of a derelict 1940’s dairy into a new heated swimming pool, the ‘green retrofitting’ of a Grade II listed 19th-century oast house and the development of a new country house all to a low carbon brief, constructed from local materials.

OLD MILL BARNS, SIDLESHAM

Old Mill Barns is a collection of buildings that were used as cow sheds and stables next to a farm.  The clients aim was to update the buildings so that they were comfortable, warm and more energy efficient while retaining the character and feel of the property.
