Sussex Heritage Trust – awards criteria

Do you have a project in Sussex that could win a Sussex Heritage Trust Award? Could you nominate an committed individual who works tirelessly for the heritage of Sussex who might win the Person of the Year Award? Is there a craftsperson who could win a Building Crafts Award, or young apprentice who deserves praise and recognition for their efforts? Does your project fall within the South Downs National Park in Sussex and could be put forward for a special Award? Does your project inspire excellence in sustainability, biodiversity and energy efficiency?

CATEGORIES

The Public & Community Award

A restoration or new project, which provides or improves facilities for the community. Examples include village halls, clubrooms, signs, museums, schools, libraries, open spaces and entertainment facilities. Open to individuals and organisations including councils, clubs, societies, associations etc.

The Commercial Award

A non-residential (e.g. shops. offices and industrial) restoration, conversion or new-build, which can be within a Conservation Area, a National Park an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on a “brownfield site” or including a Listed Building, enhancing and preserving its character and/or surroundings.

The Large Scale Residential Award

A restoration, conversion or new-build of more than ten units, which can be within a Conservation Area, a National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on a ‘brownfield’ site or including a Listed Building, enhancing and preserving its character and/or surroundings.

The Mid Scale Residential Award

A restoration, conversion or new-build of two to ten units, which can be within a Conservation Area, a National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on a ‘brownfield site’ or including a Listed Building, enhancing and preserving its character and/or surroundings.

The Small Scale Residential Award: New Build

A new-build of one unit, which enhances and preserves its environment.

The Small Scale Residential Award: Restoration, Conversion and Extension

A restoration and/or conversion of one unit, which can be within a Conservation Area, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on a “brownfield site” or including a Listed Building, enhancing and preserving its character and/or surroundings. This can include a new building extension/improvements on a listed property, where restoration has taken place.

The Landscape & Gardens Award

A reclamation or improvement scheme in an urban or rural environment, e.g. garden features, ponds, open spaces or parkland, which restores an original feature or facility or creates a new one in a public or private area. We recommend that planting be established before entering the project.

The Ecclesiastical Building Award

A restoration, repair, conversion or development scheme, which improves all, or part of an existing or former ecclesiastical building whilst maintaining, where appropriate, its ecclesiastical or consecrated status.

Individual Awards

The Building Crafts Award

An example of high quality work by a craftsperson using traditional skills or crafts, e.g. thatch, flint, plaster, iron, stone, wood, glass, and other materials etc., which repairs or enhances architectural features. This award is given to the person rather than the project.

The Sussex Heritage Trust Person of the Year Award

The recognition of one person’s outstanding commitment to the heritage of Sussex. The person may work in a voluntary or paid capacity. This category is free to enter and does not require completing the entry form. To enter, please get in touch with your nomination including the nominee’s name, address and telephone number and why you believe they deserve this year’s award.

Young Apprentice of the Year Award

The recognition of a young apprentice or trainee (aged 16-25) who has made a real difference to their workspace and shown a commitment to the heritage of Sussex. This category is free to enter. To apply, please contact the Sussex Heritage Trust by email to tell us the nominee’s name and why you think they deserve this Award.

The Eco Award

If you are entering the Sussex Heritage Trust Awards you can also put your project forward for an ‘Eco Award’. The recognition of a project’s commitment to excellence in sustainability, biodiversity and energy efficiency. Please note Building Crafts and Person of the Year cannot be put forward for this category.

The South Downs Award

The South Downs Award is an opportunity to promote outstanding design in a nationally-designated landscape. This coveted award will go to a project that clearly demonstrates a positive contribution to the South Downs National Park, including schemes that have conserved and enhanced the natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural heritage of the area.
