Can you briefly introduce your organisation and tell us what you do?

Established in 1949, we are a third-generation specialist roofing company with a long-standing reputation for excellence and craftsmanship across the South East. We manage a diverse portfolio of projects—from intricate heritage renewals and domestic repairs to modern flat roofing and liquid plastic solutions—partnering with leading manufacturers to ensure the highest quality materials. Trusted by architects, local authorities, the National Trust, and building contractors, our award-winning work across commercial and historic sectors reflects our deep commitment to professionalism and technical expertise.

How long have you been operating in Sussex (or connected to the region)?

Established in 1949, we have been operating across the South East for over 75 years.

What is your organisation’s connection to heritage, conservation, or the built environment?

Our commitment to the built environment is rooted in a respect for architectural history. While we handle a comprehensive range of projects—from modern domestic flat roofs to standard pitched tiling—our most rewarding work lies in the field of heritage roofing, restoration and conservation.

The restoration of historic structures requires more than just standard technical skill; it demands a deep understanding of traditional materials and period-appropriate techniques. Our specialist workforce is trained in the application of heritage materials such as:

  • Hand-made clay tiles and natural slates.
  • Leadwork casting and bossing.
  • Authentic lime mortars and traditional timber repairs.

By collaborating closely with heritage bodies and conservation officers, we ensure that Grade I and Grade II Listed Buildings are restored with the utmost integrity. Our goal is to maintain these structures as prominent local landmarks, ensuring their structural health and aesthetic beauty can be enjoyed by future generations.

What inspired your organisation to become a sponsor of the Sussex Heritage Trust Awards?

Our decision to sponsor the Sussex Heritage Trust Awards is driven by a shared commitment to excellence in the built environment and the long-term sustainability of our industry.

The Sussex Heritage Trust plays a vital role in setting the benchmark for high-quality conservation, restoration, and innovative new-build projects. By celebrating these achievements, the Awards encourage a culture of excellence that aligns perfectly with our own dedication to craftsmanship.

One of the most pressing challenges in the roofing sector is the looming “skills gap.” Roofing is frequently overlooked as a career path for young people, leading to a situation where master craftsmen are retiring without a new generation ready to take their place.

Our sponsorship specifically supports the Trust’s initiatives, which are essential for:

  • Providing specialised training in traditional building techniques.
  • Fostering interest in heritage careers among young professionals.
  • Securing the future of the industry by developing the next generation of skilled artisans.

Our sponsorship is our way of giving back to the region we have served since 1949. By supporting the Trust, we are actively participating in the preservation of the unique architectural and natural beauty of Sussex, ensuring that its historic character remains intact for years to come, and celebrating quality design, work and craftsmanship.

How long have you been involved as a sponsor or supporter?

We have been a dedicated supporter and sponsor of the Sussex Heritage Trust for over 20 years. This two-decade partnership reflects our deep-rooted commitment to the region’s architecture and natural landscape.

What does being a sponsor mean to your organisation?

It shows our commitment to promoting and carrying out high quality craftsmanship, and the importance of looking after heritage and historic properties.

Proud to be a sponsor and have a positive effect on our local landmarks.

Why do you believe it’s important to support heritage projects and organisations in Sussex?

For our organisation, support the Sussex Heritage Trust is a meaningful way to invest in the future of the Sussex landscape and the survival of essential heritage skills. It allows us to support the high standards of conservation we’ve championed for over 75 years while ensuring the next generation of master craftsmen has the training needed to preserve our region’s historic landmarks.

Are there any particular Sussex heritage projects or success stories that have inspired you?

When attending the various events and awards, the level of quality throughout all contractors is inspiring and is a good prompt to continue to go above and beyond to maintain the highest quality possible standards.

How do you see the future of heritage in Sussex?

With continued collaboration between contractors and project teams will ensure heritage properties and crafts are undertaken to the highest standards to preserve properties in Sussex.

Continued training is vital to ensure crafts do not die out, and this is why Clarke Roofing are keen to continue our training of staff and promote apprenticeships within the industry.

Are there new initiatives, collaborations, or projects you are planning that will support the heritage sector?

We have agreed to support the Sussex Heritage Trust work experience programme. Whereby when we have a roofing project that is either a Grade I or II listed property, or within a conservation area, in the appropriate demographic to the trainee, we can provide hands on experience on a live project.

What does “heritage” mean to you personally?

To Clarke Roofing, heritage means preserving traditional Sussex landmarks while, where needed, making them usable and accessible to people.

This helps maintain the culture within the region, and the understanding of methods by those viewing, and pride by those undertaking.
