In Memory of Lord Lloyd of Berwick
Lord Lloyd of Berwick died on Sunday 8th December 2024, at the age of 95.
A distinguished British judge and member of the House of Lords, Lord Lloyd was widely recognised as an outstanding jurist. He was knighted in 1978 and served as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary (Law Lord) from 1993 to 1999. Throughout his career, he chaired several high-profile inquiries, including the 1996 review of legislation against terrorism and the 2004 inquiry into Gulf War illnesses. See Telegraph Obituary.
In 2002, the Sussex Heritage Trust established the role of President, a position Lord Lloyd graciously accepted following the unexpected passing of the Earl of Limerick. Taking on the role at a challenging time for the Trust, he played a pivotal part in strengthening its financial position, enhancing the importance of the Awards, and guiding the charity toward a more active campaigning role. Upon his retirement in 2009, Lord Egremont succeeded him as President.
Lord Lloyd remained a dedicated supporter of the Sussex Heritage Trust, continuing his involvement as a Patron. He is survived by his wife, Jane, pictured with Lord Lloyd at Petworth House in 2017. His funeral was held at St Michael & All Angels Church, Berwick. On behalf of the Sussex Heritage Trust, our Chairman, David Cowan, has extended our deepest condolences to his family.
