Building conservation traineeships

The Sussex Heritage Trust is supporting the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum’s exciting search to find two Conservation trainees.

As part of the recently announced Heritage Lottery Fund-supported Gateway Project, with its new visitor centre providing admissions facilities, shop and café, new interpretation galleries, a unique opportunity has arisen for two Conservation trainees to work for six months with the conservation and re-erection of the Museum’s medieval house from Sole Street, and 18th century wagon shed from Pallingham Quay which are being moved to other locations at the Museum to make way for the Gateway buildings.

The trainees will work on a wide range of practical tasks related to the conservation of the Museum exhibit buildings and larger artefacts. This will include the handling and repairing in the Jerwood Gridshell Space of the timbers from the Sole Street and Pallingham Quay buildings, together with opportunities to assist with other conservation projects involving Museum exhibits and large artefacts. There will also be opportunities to participate in appropriate building conservation skills courses from the Museum’s lifelong training programme, which will provide a high quality learning experience.
